Trip Information
Annapurna Sanctuary Trekking Route
We started our journey from Nayapul, following the Modi River as it drains off the glacier far above the base camp, passing several villages along its way. The path is wide and well kept, particularly between Tirkhedunga and Ulleri, where local Gurungs built a staircase of more than 3,000 stone steps.
After that, the path ascends gradually through rhododendron forests to Ghorepani, a mountain pass with views of the abyssal Kali Gandaki valley sandwiched between two 8,000-meter peaks.
Morning hike to Poon Hill to witness the sunrise over the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himal from this bird’s eye viewpoint is undoubtedly one of the best sights within Himalaya.
Two days pass as we climb through the thick forest, where we stay at Tadapani for an early morning sunrise with Annapurna South. The cloud behind Machhapuchhare, the final settlement of the Modi Khola, reveals Chomrong, which is two days later.
Above Chomrong, the trail to Annapurna Sanctuary is zigzag up and down through bamboo and rhododendron forest then out on the rocky steep trail to Deurali with impressive Machhapuchare and Annapurna peak following you everywhere while walking. After three strenuous days, we will arrive at Machhapuchare Base Camp (3,700m/12,139ft) early in the day, take the optional hike to the hill behind the camp to see beautiful snow peaks of “queen of the mountain” miss Fish Tail.
Wake up for another morning hike to the snowfield and the edge of glacier toward Annapurna Base Camp, on the way when the first sun rays of the day drop down on the mountain changes the color of the sky from dark blue to lighter blue you just want to stop in silent and bow and when it paints the summit of Annapurna with orange color, you will find every breath is a prayer.
Variations
- If you want to avoid repeating the same route when going down, you can take a helicopter flight from base camp to Pokhara. You get more time to chill in Annapurna Base Camp with this option.
- The transportation from Pokhara to Kathmandu takes 8-10 hours by drive but only 1 hour by flight. Fly after the trek is a more relaxing way to end your trek.
