Trip Information

The Route

Get to Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lake you can skip the crowd for the part to Gokyo Valley. Gokyo Ri offers a heart-stopping panorama of peaks than that seen from Kala Pathar.

The trail shares the route to Everest Base Camp then it turns westward crosses the hair-raising pass of Cho La 5,420 m (17,782 ft), squeezed between the snowcapped summits of Lobuche (6,135m/20,127ft) and Cholatse (6,443m/21,138ft). Descent from the pass, cross the longest glacier of the region you get the stunning Gokyo Lakes view comes into sight.

If you have time and are willing to take more challenges, I recommend taking a few extra days and doing a complete circuit around the park called The Everest 3 Passes. You lose 95% of people in other parts of this trek beside the base camp.

Best Time

This trip is best to do during autumn (Oct/Nov):

  • You get a higher chance of crossing the Cho La pass.
  • Gokyo Lakes has a beautiful color just like photos
  • Higher elevations temperatures are below zero, around -15 to -15 Celsius in late November in the early morning

Spring (Mar/May) is another good time to go.

  • Beautiful rhododendron forest on the trail from Namche Bazaar to Pangpoche
  • Gokyo Lakes are partially frozen early spring
  • At the elevation of 4,500 meters and higher you wake up and see the water bottle frozen solid indoors.

Winter (Dec/Feb) is freezing cold with excellent views:

  • Snow cover most high altitude trails
  • Cold temperatures can get to -25 to -15 celsius in the early morning, you get to the point where you just wear what you want to hike in the next day to bed

Monsoon (June/Sep) is hot and humid with Lukla flight delays often, this is the offseason.

  • You see more flowers and plants at this time
  • Clouds hideaway peaks in lower elevations
  • You get not a crowded trail

Variations

Most people fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and start from there, but you can hike 3-4 days extra and skip the flight.

Fitness

This journey is amazing, around 4-8 hours of hiking per day with the most amazing views of the Nepal Himalaya. Go slowly as you will need to adapt to high altitudes. There is a risk of altitude sickness on this trek.
